Basic command learning scheme

Almost any command can be taught to a dog according to the basic scheme.

The good thing about this scheme is that the dog’s behavior is no longer dependent on the presence of a treat in your hand, and you can switch to a variable reinforcer, rather than offering a bribe every time.

The basic scheme includes 4 steps:

  1. Guidance is performed with the right hand with a treat. The same delicacy from the right hand is given to the dog.
  2. Pointing is performed with the right hand with a treat, but the reward (the same treat) is given from the left hand.
  3. Guidance is performed with the right hand without treats. However, the right hand is clenched into a fist, as if there is still a treat inside. The award is given from the left hand. Most often, a voice command is entered at this stage.
  4. A voice command is given. At the same time, the right hand without a treat does not point the dog, but shows a gesture. A treat after the command is issued from the left hand.
