The Artois hound has been known since the 15th century, it appeared as a result of crossing the Bloodhound with other hounds. The name of the breed indicates the place of its origin – the northern province of Artois in France. It was there that these dogs were first bred.

It is interesting that at one time hunters almost lost purebred Artois hounds: they were too actively crossed with English dogs. But in the 20th century, the breed was revived, and today its representatives are involved in hunting for a hare, a fox and even a wolf.

The Artois Hound is not a companion dog, but a working breed that is bred solely for its qualities. These hardy, hardworking and very attentive animals are excellent hunting assistants.

In everyday life, the Artois hound rarely causes trouble for the owner, but this is only in the case of proper upbringing and training. Many dogs tend to take on a dominant position, so they just need early socialization and training with a dog handler. An inexperienced owner is unlikely to be able to cope with the difficult nature of the pet.

Behaviour

Interestingly, the balanced Artois hounds do not need constant attention. They quite calmly do without care and affection 24 hours a day. However, this does not mean that they do not need the owner, on the contrary, the dog will be happy to meet him in the evening after work and will gladly settle down to sleep somewhere at his feet while he is resting.

The Artois Hound is not the best guard. She is rather indifferent to strangers, and some representatives of the breed are even very welcoming and friendly. So an uninvited guest is unlikely to be frightened by the unobtrusive barking of a dog. However, if desired, the owner can raise a pet in accordance with their goals and expectations. The main thing is perseverance and the right approach to the dog.

The Artois Hound requires respect, although she also loves to have fun and play. The dog will gladly join children’s games and pranks.

As for livability with other animals in the house, much depends on the nature of the neighbors. Some cannot get along for years, while others are ready to be friends even with cats and rodents.

The short, thick coat of the Artois hound does not require complex care from the owner. It is enough to comb the dog once a week with a stiff brush-comb to remove dead hairs. During the molting period, the pet needs to be combed more often – a couple of times a week. Bathe the dog as needed.
